Donna Henes: Winter Solstice: Anniversary Celebration of Creation

Donna Henes: Winter Solstice: Anniversary Celebration of Creation

With the recognition that the solar light in the sky makes it possible for there to be life on Earth, comes enlightened responsibility. As the sun energizes our lives, so too, must we return energy skyward at the solstice when the winter light is at its weakest.

As Mother Teresa counsels, "To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it." Now we must ask not what the sun can do for us, but rather, what we can do for the sun? It becomes imperative in fact, to do all that we can to entice, aid, abet and ensure the safe return of the sun to earth. Life depends upon it.

Now this day,
My sun father,
Now that you have come out standing to your
sacred place,
That from which we draw the water of life,
Prayer meal
Here I give you.

-- Zuni Offering to the Rising Sun

In both imperial China and pre-Columbian Peru, it was the holy duty of the emperors to personally assure the continuation of the cosmos through their annual performance of ritual sacrifices to Heaven on the Winter Solstice in remarkably similar ceremonies.

After fasting for three days they would each emerge before the winter sunrise and proceed to the top of the Round Mound in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing and to Haucaypata, Cuzco's ceremonial plaza. There, before retinues of their peoples, they offered libations and obeisance to the celestial center of the universe. They knelt, they bowed -- the Inca blew reverent kisses -- to the supreme solar source of all light.

The king of Swaziland in South Africa, the incarnation of the sun himself, retires in seclusion for the period preceding the solstice. Then, on the day of the sun's return, his warriors dance and chant in front of his compound, urging him to emerge from the dark.

The Mayan Indians of Guatemala perform a flying pole dance, palo voladare, in honor of the old, indigenous pre-Columbian sun god. Two dancers climb a 50-foot pole to the energetic beat of a flute and drum. At the top, they each wrap one end of an attached rope around one of their ankles and leap off into the wild blue yonder. If they manage to land on their feet, the sun god will be pleased enough to start sending more light to earth each day.

Soyal is the Winter Solstice observance of the Hopi People of the American Southwest. During this sacred season of solar renewal, the kachinas, the guides, the spirit helpers of the tribe, emerge from their dark kivas. They come up from the underground ceremonial spaces to join the community for the six-month period of ascending light. Fires are lit and the original creation tale is retold, reenacted and reclaimed. This ritual participation in the process of the workings of the universe affirms and assures the continuation of the cyclical order of time. At Soyal, the sun is symbolically, ceremonially, turned back, thus renewing life for the world.

The return of the retreating sun, which retrieves us from the dark of night, the pitch of winter, is a microcosmic recreation of the origination of the universe, the first birth of the sun. The Winter Solstice is an anniversary celebration of creation. It is both natural and necessary to join together in the warmth of community to welcome the return of light to a world in the dark and to rekindle the spirit of hope in our heart.

If you are in the NYC area, please join me to celebrate the Winter Solstice:

Ben Greenfield: Which Workout Burns The Most Fat?

Ben Greenfield: Which Workout Burns The Most Fat?

With so many workout choices, from Zumba to TRX to P90X to BodyPump to Spinning to Yogalate to Crossfit to Beach Body Insanity, how can you know which one will burn fat fastest?

The majority of workouts that advertise themselves as high fat-burning can be broken down into three different categories: cardio, resistance and cardio plus resistance. Here's a breakdown of all three:

Cardio: An example of a cardio class would be spinning, in which you ride a stationary bike with varying levels of resistance and pedaling speeds, typically to a choreographed series of songs and incorporating movements such as standing, hovering, and jumping. Dance workouts like Zumba or hip-hop would also fall into the cardio category.

Resistance: A resistance workout would include activities like power yoga, which consists of body weight resistance exercises combined with stretching; Pilates, which is primarily focused on abdominal and lower back resistance training; TRX, which involves pulling and pushing the body with a special type of band; and Bodypump, which uses dumbbells, barbells, and step benches for resistance.

Cardio Plus Resistance: As you may have guessed, cardio plus resistance combines the features above. P90X and Beach Body Insanity are two popular examples of activities that have you lifting weights one moment, then performing jumping jacks or step-ups the next. Another term for this type of exercising is "concurrent training."

So of these three types of workouts, which burns the most fat?

A 2008 study at the University of California which was published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research investigated this question by having one group do cardio, another group do resistance, and a final group do cardio plus resistance (in which they ran for 30-60 seconds after completing each weight lifting set).

Even though each group did the same amount of work, the cardio plus resistance group experienced an enormously significant fat loss compared to the other two groups!

The cardio plus resistance group not only burned fat and built muscle at the same time, but the amount of fat they burned was a tenfold increase over the amount burned by the groups that did cardio or resistance training only.

So when it comes to which workout burns the most fat, research suggests that combining cardio and resistance training may be the ultimate solution. Want to try it out without stepping foot in a gym? Here's a sample workout:

1. 10 push-ups or knee push-ups
2. 15-20 jumping jacks
3. 10 squats or lunges
4. 15-20 more jumping jacks
5. 10 crunches followed immediately by 15-20 jumping jacks
6. 10 sets of deadlifts to press
7. 15-20 jumping jacks

If you get tired of jumping jacks for the cardio component, try squat-thrust-jumps, vertical jumps, lunge jumps or horizontal jumps.

Check out my demonstration of these techniques.

A word of caution: If your goal is not to burn fat, but rather to build strength, you'd be better off doing your resistance training as a separate workout. Similarly, if you're training for endurance, then you should focus on a high-quality cardio workout that isn't interrupted by strength training.

How Trace Elements In Food Slash Pancreatic Cancer Risks

How Trace Elements In Food Slash Pancreatic Cancer Risks

High levels of the trace elements selenium and nickel may help cut the risk of deadly pancreatic cancer, according to new research.

The elements, which are found in certain foods, appear to offer a protective effect against the disease.

Pancreatic cancer is frequently diagnosed at an advanced stage and kills 80% of people in under a year. Only 5% of patients are still alive five years after diagnosis.

The latest study, published in the journal Gut, focused on patients with exocrine pancreatic cancer, the most common form of the disease. Researchers found high levels of selenium and nickel could lower the risk whereas high levels of lead, arsenic and cadmium could boost the chances of developing the disease.

In the research, experts assessed 12 trace element levels in the toenails of 118 patients with pancreatic cancer and compared them with 399 hospital patients without cancer.

Levels of certain trace elements were found to be significantly higher or lower among the cancer patients than among those in the comparison group.

Patients with the highest levels of arsenic and cadmium in their nails were between two and 3.5 times more likely to have pancreatic cancer than those with the lowest levels. And those with the highest levels of lead were more than six times as likely to have the disease.

However those with the highest levels of nickel and selenium were between 33% and 95% less likely to have the disease compared with those with the lowest levels.

The experts, from the US and Spain, said the findings may have an impact on clinical practice in future. Selenium intake could be tested in clinical trials as a preventative measure for people at high risk of pancreatic cancer, they said.

They added: "Our results support an increased risk of pancreatic cancer associated with higher levels of cadmium, arsenic and lead, as well as an inverse association with higher levels of selenium and nickel. These novel findings, if replicated in independent studies, would point to an important role of trace elements in pancreatic carcinogenesis."
