Picnic Table Full of Food

Happy Labor Day everyone!

I wanted to share a story with you about a past Labor Day that was not a happy day in my life. The fact is that I often had a hard time not using the holidays, any holiday, as an excuse to overeat. I know that Labor Day isn’t a holiday typically associated with a certain food, but I made it a holiday all about food.

On this particular Labor Day, which was probably in 1996, my girls were 5 and 2 years old and I weighed over 300 pounds. Our Sunday School class from church had been invited to a Labor Day picnic at a class member’s farm and we were all pretty excited.

There would be bonfires, hayrides, and tables and tables of food. I was tagged to bring some desserts, which was my favorite thing to cook. I made cupcakes and cookies, dressed the girls in matching outfits, and John and I headed to the farm.

Once we got there, the girls found their little friends and played nearby while John and I visited with the grown-ups. I hovered near the food table, just waiting for the “dig in” signal from our host and hostess. On that table was potato salad, hot dogs, chips of all kinds, barbecue chicken, several desserts, baked beans, some fresh veggies (as if), and assorted other side dishes.

Our host finally said the prayer and we started to line up to get our food. I was holding two plates; one for myself and one for my littlest daughter while John handled his plate and my oldest daughter’s plate. Just as I began to get some food, my friend standing behind me said, “So, Diane. How is Weight Watchers going?”

I looked at her and wished that she had stayed home. She just ruined my whole picnic by asking me that question.

I stumbled around with my answer and finally said, “Oh, fine.” I went through the line picking up the healthy foods and leaving all the tasty food on the table. I got a hot dog, which at the time qualified for a healthy food, some of those boring vegetables, and some fruit. No dessert, no chips, nothing fun. All because of those words my friend uttered.

I was so upset that John noticed my bad mood. “What’s wrong with you?” he asked. I told him nothing but inside I was seething because my day was now ruined.

Looking back I realize how disjointed my thinking was. Instead of having fun watching the kids play, visiting with friends, and sitting around the bonfire with our class, all I could think about was the food.

After we left the picnic, I made John stop at Chick-Fil-A and get me some more food. I sullenly ate my sandwich, fries, and drank my coke but cheered up when I finished off the chocolate milkshake. The rest of my family didn’t eat anything because they ate at the picnic and were full. I wasn’t all that hungry, but felt cheated from the picnic.

The whole time I was eating I felt like a complete failure as a dieter and on some level, as a person. But I couldn’t seem to stop myself.

After 15 years of weight maintenance and hundreds of holidays later, I realized that I always looked at holidays in regards to food rather than relationships.

During my weight loss year I deliberately approached holidays without having the focus on food and it helped immensely. I still visited with friends or family, but forced myself to stop hovering around the food table and focus on the people I was with.

It’s still tempting to focus on food at the holidays, but with a gentle reminder to myself, I usually succeed in focusing on relationships.

I’d encourage you to remember that holidays happen all year long whether you are trying to lose weight or not. Learning to handle them is just one part of your journey into a healthier relationship with food forever.

Have you ever found yourself focusing on the food rather than the relationships at holiday times? How do you shift your focus? Diane

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers. Every week, the BuiltLean Team addresses your fitness and nutrition questions. Read on to find out more.

  1. Can I still workout with a rotator cuff injury?
  2. Do L-arginine and glutamine help decrease fat and increase lean muscle?
  3. Will the v-ups abs exercise help me burn fat? (V-up exercise youtube video)
  4. What’s the body fat % where most chest fat is gone?
  5. Why are there no arm exercises in the BuiltLean Program?

Question #1 – Can I still workout with a rotator cuff injury?

Question: Any suggestions for workouts that can be done while waiting for a rotator cuff injury to heal? Also, in your opinion, after a rotator cuff injury are people ever able to really get back to the workouts / weights they were used to? – Sheri
How Do You Measure Muscle Gain?
Answer: Sheri,
If you are concerned about losing fitness during your upper body injury, I would recommend using a stationary bike as an alternative to running, or swimming, or any exercise using movement of your shoulders. Lower extremity body weight exercises such as lunges, squats, can also be implimented. As far as getting back to workouts after a rotator cuff injury, it all depends on the extent of the injury. With most Physical Therapy offices, after the rehab is over, it means that you are cleared to perform daily physical activity, which mainly consist of low intensity movements. High impact activities such as lifting weights takes a lot longer for you to regain the same strength you had prior to the injury. I would speak with your Physical Therapist and see what he/she has to say about your rotator cuff injury. Hope this helps!

Question #2 – Do L-arginine and glutamine help decrease fat and increase lean muscle?

Question: I have a question about L-arginine and Glutamine. Do they help to decrease fat and increase muscle mass? Do you have any experience with these supplements? – Markku
How Do You Measure Muscle Gain?
Answer: L-arginine and Glutamine are two types of amino acids, which means they are two of the 20 building blocks of proteins. Consuming them in supplement form can help build muscle mass, but they can also be found in natural foods. Also, nutrition or supplements are only part of the entire puzzle of building muscle. You need the necessary stimulus to start the process, which is accomplished through resistance training. While we have written a lot of articles on the efficacy of supplements, we will add glutamine and l-arganine to the list!

- Kwesi (Kwesi Peters, CPT, Community Manager)

Question #3 – Will the v-ups abs exercise help me burn fat?

Question: Question: Will doing this v-up abs exercise help me burn more fat? Thanks – Christopher
How Do You Measure Muscle Gain?
Answer: Any form of exercise is more effective when you have your nutrition dialed in. Nutrition typically has the biggest impact on your exercise goals, particularly if your goal is to lose body fat. Strength training helps to shape your body and encourage your body to preserve lean muscle while instead using fat for fuel. In short, this exercise will be most effective as part of a complete workout and nutrition program. Hope that answers your question!

- Kristin (Kristin Rooke, CSCS, CPT)

Question #4 – What’s the body fat % where most chest fat is gone?

Question: Thanks for the article, Charlie!
In your experience, what’s the body fat % where most chest fat is gone? I’m aware that every body stores fat differently, but is there an approximate target range to strive for?
I’ve gone down from 25%~ to 14%~, and while I feel great and have very little stomach fat, the chest fat remains stubborn. It has definitely been reduced, but it’s still enough to make me uncomfortable. I am planning on dropping down to 10% anyway, but having an idea of where the goal-post lies would be comforting. – Andreas
How Do You Measure Muscle Gain?
Answer: Great question, Andreas. I wish I had a definitive answer, but as you said everyone is different. But since you asked, here are my thoughts:If you have very little stomach fat at 14%, then it is likely that most of the remaining extra fat is in your chest. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that a significant portion of every pound of fat you lose will come from your chest. Let’s look at how much fat would be lost if a 200 lb. person went from 14% to 10% (and I am using this number because you didn’t mention how much you weigh) using the builtlean calculation from this article: http://www.builtlean.com/2011/08/24/lean-body-mass-definition-formula/

Lean Body Mass = Body Weight – (Body Weight x Body Fat %)
Lean Body Mass = 200 – (200 x 14 %) = 172 pounds (28 pounds of fat)

Now assuming your lean mass stays the same, we can use the same equation but this time the variable is the body weight:
172 = x -(x)(10%)
172 = x – 0.1x
172 = 0.9x
body weight = 191.1
Subtracting the lean body mass from the body weight will give you the fat mass.
Fat mass: 191.1-172 = 19.1 pounds.

Thus, to get to 10% from 14%, a 200 lb. person would need to lose about 9 pounds of fat (28-19.1). If most of this came from the chest (and it should as you have said your belly fat is minimal), I suspect our example would be very happy at 10%. If your weight is significantly more or less, then plug in your weight and see what comes up. If you want to post those numbers I would be more than happy to comment. Let us know!

If my math is wrong, I truly apologize.

- Charlie Seltzer ( Charlie Seltzer, MD, CES, DABOM)

Question #5 – Why are there no arm exercises in the BuiltLean Program?

Question: Are there no arm exercises in the BuiltLean Program? – Brook
How Do You Measure Muscle Gain?
Answer: Arms exercises are in the program, but they are optional. I haven’t done many arm exercises in over 2 years and my body looks and feels better because of it. If you have small arms and want to get them bigger, then doing some extra arm exercises makes sense. If not, I just don’t think they are necessary!

Workout The same things that cause obesity, namely, high levels of saturated fat and added sugar, also cause heart disease and erectile dysfunction. While the main way to avoid this is to change eating patterns, new studies show that exercise does effectively improve both erectile dysfunction and the function of vessels that supply blood to the heart. That doesn’t mean that exercise can “cure” a bad diet, but it can help mitigate the effects, which is a step in the right direction.

This week’s news includes a warning about a strain of salmonella found in Tempeh, so use caution if this food is a mainstay in your diet. There’s more about refining the use of BMI in obesity measurements, and the affect of appetite hormones in those already overweight. Plus, one man’s mission to create something that could function as a food substitute – but is it a good idea? See what you think.

Diane Carbonell on waist measurements

One of the top 10 search terms for my blog lately has been “What Should My Waist Size Be?” The above is a picture of me yesterday taking my own measurements after a fast walk.

I did a post awhile ago on waist size and still get people clicking over to read it. There is a lot of information about the importance of reducing belly fat because of the health risks associated with higher amounts of abdominal fat.

Waist size, hip size, arm size, thigh size, chest size, and even wrist size change as you lose weight and get more fit. Honestly, I was shocked at how my numbers changed as I lost weight. Even my wedding rings fit once more after I lost weight.

I wish that I had measured more frequently as I lost weight because seeing the numbers drop from waaaay to high to normal measurements was very encouraging. In case you didn’t remember or haven’t read my book, at my highest weight my waist size was well above 60 inches. How did I know? Because a standard 60 inch tape measure wouldn’t even come close to fitting around my hips.

You can see from this picture below that I carried a lot of weight around my hips. Well, the weight was everywhere but you get the idea. :)

Diane Carbonell pushing child on swing.

The benefits of measuring yourself as you lose weight are mainly psychological as you do not need to measure yourself in order to lose weight, but you may give your weight loss efforts a boost if you do, especially if you are dealing with a plateau. Sometimes your body shrinks while the scale stays the same. I’ve seen that happen a lot.

Although I could tell from the way my stretchy pants fit that I was getting smaller in the hips and waist, it was very exciting to be able to fit the measuring tape around my hips and see a number under 50 inches.

In the years since I lost half of myself I make a deliberate effort to take my measurements regularly. It not only keeps me in touch with my body but also gives me a heads up if things change.

I’d encourage you to measure everything you can think of and keep those measurements in a safe place. Update them often as you continue on your journey.

Have you measured yourself along the way? What benefits do you see to measuring regularly? Diane

I’ve been demonized by my family. I may as well grow horns and start attacking people with my pitch fork. The fam gets ticked because I constantly harass them to take off their shoes at the door. They say I’m real irritating and bitchy with my “no-shoes” demands, but I wouldn’t be such a bitch if they would just do what I ask. They barely listen to me. I’m ignored lots and lots.

Momma gets no respect.

If you trek your shoes into the house, you need to cut that shizz out right now. It doesn’t matter if you have carpet, tile or hardwood. You’re dragging in nasty stuff from outside that contaminates your flooring with germs, pathogens and toxic crap that can ultimately make you extremely ill. This news is especially important if you exercise at home or if you have a baby.

Why is that? Home exercisers no doubt get down close to the floor and babies are big time crawlers. Keep in mind that pathogens can also be picked up by bare feet in the house and carried into bed or wherever else you roam.

Besides the nastiness dragged in from stepping in saliva, snot loogies, vomit and urine (think about the floor in a public restroom), here are a few of the most serious offenders given a free pass into the home when you don’t leave your shoes at the door:

COLIFORM: An easy-to-test-for organism found in the intestinal tract of both human and animals, and also in soil and vegetation. Coliform is an indicator that harmful pathogens may be present. These pathogens include viruses, bacteria, protozoa and parasites. Coliform found in water (ever step in a puddle or muddied soil?) is a sure fire indicator of fecal contamination.

E. COLI: Belonging to the Coliform family, harmful strains of E.Coli are primarily introduced to the body orally via such routes as food, water, weird sex or poor sanitation, and can be found on common surfaces such as floors, toilet seats, and door handles.

KLEBSIELLA PNEUMONIA: This bacteria is found in the intestines and poop of humans. It can cause significant damage to the lungs if inhaled, and can also cause a bloodstream infection. Klebsiella exposure can be fatal. Exposure to the pathogen may come about after using the bathroom, ingesting contaminated food, person-to-person contact via contaminated hands, and also by coming into contact with other contaminated surfaces. This pathogen can also cause urinary tract infection and infection at wound sites on the body.

GOOD READ >> Study Reveals High Level Bacteria on Footwear

…and let’s not forget about motor oil. It’s obviously toxic to humans and animals. If you’ve ever stepped on a greasy black patch in a parking lot, you brought those contaminants into your home.

That’s it! I’m done with my pathogenic, bacteria-laden fear-mongering for today.

You’re welcome.

Hello all,

Sorry for my absence.  Vacation Bible School started today and for the first time since Fitbloggin I feel like the end of my crazy July is in sight.  I need to make it through the week and then, well, I have a crazy August.   But at least it will be a normal work week and not a 60+ hour week like I have been having.  All spare moments have been spent with my family so while I love you all, I just had to stay away.

But here is a quick blurb to let you know I am here.  I am trying to find a time to read blogs and blog myself.  I am now 25 weeks pregnant and so far so good.  Of course I take my glucose test in 2 weeks so we’ll see how that goes.  Sadly my healthy living is always impacted by stress and I’ve been eating lots of pizza and fast food.  I am definitely sick of it though, so I am looking forward to real meals again this week.  Especially now that our garden is full of yummy things!  Roasted Zuchinni is on the menu for tonight.  Yum.

That’s the news from Liz,  I’ll try to post VBS pictures here at some point too.  My sets turned out great this year!

Unfortunately, there is no elixir of youth that can make us look young forever. But there are all sorts of products in the market today that of course promises to solve all our skin ageing woes. Be wary though, because not all products in the market live up to its promises. Some of them actually cover up the problem, hence creating more problem over time because it's not treated right at the source. With this, let me share to you some of the top skin ageing problems and how to effectively treat them. Here are some of them. Source

I originally published a post today that after posting, I became aware of the unfortunate timing and while unintended, insensitive considering the devastating train accident in Spain yesterday. I have experienced first hand unintended insensitive comments; when someone says they feel like they’ve been hit by a car, my heart sinks. But this post isn’t about me. It is about those who are right now trying to figure out what has happened to them in a split second; picking up the pieces and trying to make sense out of something so tragic.

So in light of the horrible train accident in Spain, the accident a few weeks ago in Canada, and ALL THE OTHER unfortunate yet tragic accidents people are going through, today’s post will be short. A post that reminds ME that my problems are nothing compared to what others are going through right now.

A reminder for me to stop and pray for those around me.
A reminder for me to slow down and pray for those around me.
A reminder for me to be aware of what’s really important in this world and pray for those around me.

I put a few reminders on my work calender to prompt me to stop and pray for those around me who are experiencing devastation.

Praying. Praying. Praying.

Nesting For Weight Loss

Nesting For Weight Loss
Often attempts at weight loss (from here on in I call this fat loss - we don't want to lose our precious muscle mass which does weigh more) fit the paradigm the definition of insanity. Everybody remember this one? Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results - about as useful as head banging. Time for a paradigm shift - New Plan! Nesting!

Life, It Goes On

When Robert Frost was asked whet he'd learned from life and living, he said he could sum it up in three words Those words were 'it goes on'. We need to keep in mind that life goes on. It is so easy to get caught-up in many of the day-to-day issues and lose sight of this important realisation. Source

Happy Saturday! I woke up bright and early to get in a long run. Check out my instagram feed for a quick lil video of my morning.

You know I am not one to do a legit long run or race recap where I go through each mile. And I’m assuming you don’t have time for that?

Anyway. I tried to remember some of my random thoughts to share with the class.

My brain on a long run:

Mile 1: La di da… running running

Mile 3: There is seriously no one out right now! Just me. Hope I don’t get kidnapped…

Mile 6: Scare the crap out of a woman who is on the phone. I said “Good Morning!” two times but she was super into her call.

Mile 8: See a police officer walking a blood hound, three other officers follow a ways back and two police cars drive alongside them. Freak out and think there is a bomb.  Get less freaked out when I remember I’m in Irvine.

Mile 9.5: Refill my water bottle. Eat Sports beans. Brought along an extra Nuun for later in the run.

Mile 12: Waffles.

Mile 14: Sex.

Mile 16: Can I switch my races to half marathons instead of fulls? <- Think this at some point on every long run.

Mile 17: No seriously, I’m going to check.

Mile 18: 18 is almost 20, I bet I can stop.

Mile 20: Time to eat.

It’s not fair. Because life isn’t fair.

This heat is making me cranky. I don’t feel like cooking, I don’t feel like being social or active. We don’t have air conditioning since our house is so old and adding central air is so expensive. We do have a window unit in the kitchen and one upstairs – they’ve been working but because it’s so hot, they haven’t really been able to keep up. I’m so glad the heat wave has finally broken (right? it has, right?!) I’ve gotten a few runs in this week and plan on making Tilapia, asparagus and sweet potatoes for dinner tonight to kick the weekend off right.

I’ve been stuck this week in a “it’s not fair” thinking the past couple days. I hate when that statement creeps into my head because I KNOW life is not fair. Here’s what I’ve thought this week:

  • It’s not fair that I’ve worked out 5x a week for the past 3 week and the scale is moving so slowly (seriously… ounces?!)
  • It’s not fair that I can’t go out to eat like I see other people who are thinner than me eat out
  • It’s not fair that I can’t drink like I see other people who are thinner than me drink
  • It’s not fair that I have to focus so hard on this when others don’t.
  • It’s not fair that I see people eating ice cream and I know it’ll go right to my tush.
  • It’s not fair that I feel like the scale won’t move even though I’ve doing what I’m supposed to.

It’s not fair. It’s not fair. It’s not fair. I just want to slap myself and say “Yeah, it’s not fair… because life isn’t fair!” And I want to shake myself and say “miscarriages aren’t fair. and rape isn’t fair. and murder isn’t fair.” Life isn’t fair. My body is my body and it doesn’t act/react the way other bodies do. Someone slap me.

LIFE IS NOT FAIR, JEN

Despite my cranky “it’s not fair” attitude, I’ve eaten fairly balanced the past couple days and have done:

Sunday – hour of cardio/weights
Monday – rest day
Tuesday – 3 miles
Wednesday – skipped cardio
Thursday – 3 miles
Friday – rest day
Saturday – 6 miles (planned)

This weekend, we are going to finish painting. Because it’s been so hot and since our house isn’t the coolest, we haven’t finished it. Aside from the 6 miles I have tomorrow, I’ll do 45-60 minutes of cardio on Sunday. Not sure what else is planned for this weekend aside from the typical weekend activities: grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning, etc. Oh, I know – definitely seeing my sisters and nieces/nephews on Sunday too.

We have a dog we are doggy sitting, his name is Milos and he is adorable.

Iggy and milos

Milos will be with us for about 3 weeks and has a temperament/personality similar to Iggy’s which makes watching him so much easier! I love doggy sitting, especially when the dogs we watch are as easy like Milos.

What Ingredients Must an Effective Anti-Wrinkle Cream Have?
An anti-wrinkle cream works to plump up the surface of your skin in the gentlest way. Skin aging is something that cannot be stopped. There are however ways you can retard the aging process. There are also ways you can hide the signs of skin aging. Whether you are just on your mid-twenties and noticing the first signs of skin aging or already into your fifties, there are always ways you can improve the elasticity of your skin.

Good morning everyone!

The kids were up at the crack of dawn again despite another jam-packed day on the beach yesterday. And people say I have a lot of energy. These kids are like little Energizer bunnies!

We’ve been frolicking in the ocean all day and walking the boards all night. It’s been a pretty typical family vacation and that includes lots of pizza, ice cream and snacks. I have to be completely honest, my attempt at the no night-time snacking this week was a big failure.

I thought the challenge would help. It didn’t.

I also thought I could keep pizza eating to a minimum. I haven’t.

That being said, I’m rocking everything else. I’ve run every day I’ve been here and am about to head out again after I publish this. I took a beach yoga class last night. I walk everywhere, half the time carrying a 30-pound toddler. And I’m wearing a bathing suit daily without covering up or fearing what I look like.

Oh, it’s crossed my mind and I’ve been a little insecure while getting dressed but when I’m actually on the beach I’m too active running around with the kids to care. THAT has always been my ultimate goal and it’s more important than any number on some stupid scale.

20130529_weighin

That is also my inspiration for this week’s challenge. Five years ago I wrote 3 Steps To a Healthier YOU! Step 1 was Self-Acceptance. Our challenge this week is to put it into practice. Click here to read the self-acceptance post, have a good talk with yourself, and then take a chance this week. Wear something you’ve been scared to wear. Do something you’ve been scared to do. Push yourself ever so slightly out of your body-image comfort zone.

As I say in the post, confidence can be learned but it must be practiced, especially by those of us who have body issues.

I hope you’ll join me on this week’s challenge. Every day I step out of the house in my bathing suit it’s a little scary, but it gets easier and easier!

Can’t wait to read your updates!

Happy Tuesday!

On Friday I got a few messages that readers spotted me on ABC World News. No, they weren’t interviewing me for my opinion on the Zimmerman trial – this was the fluff they put to distract from things like that… the 7 Minute Workout!

I made a video of the 7 minute workout a few weeks ago when it first came out. Since then the video has gotten almost 50K views. And last week a producer from the show messaged me to ask if they could use a clip of my video. Um, yes.

It’s just 2 seconds of me doing the sit-ups part, but I was excited about it.

This link below will take you to the complete episode. The package on the 7 minute workout is about 2/3 of the way into the show. There’s a little line in the bottom track that you can jump to.

So my “Just the Tip” for today is actually just directed at myself.

And finally… I’ve decided I want to try and clean up my act with fashion and beauty stuff (it’s not just because of my slobbery in the video, promise. This is a long time coming).

To my credit, I did skip these super awesome Mickey Mouse leggings…
