Most doctors dread the conversation with patients where they have to tell them that their treatment has not worked and their cancer is not curable. Telling a patient that they are going to die is a difficult thing for a doctor, but it is something that the patient needs to know and deserves to know. They also have the legal right to know. There are some patients that do not want to know initially if they are going to die or not. Yet, eventually they do wish to know and it is important to break the news to them in the proper way and when they are emotionally ready.

Antibacterial drug use appears to have increased at academic medical centers between 2002 and 2006, driven primarily by greater use of broad-spectrum agents and the antibiotic vancomycin, according to a report in the Nov. 10 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. Using antibacterial drugs increases the risk that pathogens will become resistant to their effects, according to background information in the article.
